2008 Road to Celtic Colours Music Camp

[ Printable Registration Form ]

Dates: Monday, October 6 - Thursday, October 9, 2008

Registration: Register early as seating is limited using the printable registration form above, or call toll-free 1-888-743-7845.

Note: Because we wrap up after the Thursday night concert, we are offering an extra night stay on Thursday with Friday breakfast included.

Instructors: Stan Chapman, Patrick Gillis, Wendy MacIsaac. Click here to learn more about our instructors.

Come to the shores of the beautiful St. Mary’s River for a musical experience. You can improve your fiddle, piano and/or guitar playing abilities, visit our heritage site and enjoy nature walks and village fun at its best. We also plan to do the evening circles in the Courthouse, followed by a campfire and weenie/marshmallow roast by the river if weather permits.

A range of workshops will be offered which focus on the expertise of our instructors. In addition to the teaching schedule, informal musical gatherings will be held each evening with participants being our performers. On Thursday evening we present a Gala Ceilidh featuring the great music and talent of our instructors and their pupils. Tickets for this evening ceilidh will be open to the public so pre-order when you register as there are a limited number of tickets available. Additional tickets may be available at the camp so please watch for details.

WHAT TO BRING - The atmosphere at our school is casual. There is easy access to wooded trails and the beautiful St. Mary’s River is on the camp property. The fall climate can vary from warm and sunny to chilly cloudy and wet so be prepared to layer with sweaters and pants. For all music workshops participants are required to bring their own instruments, paper, strings etc. A recording device would be most useful. Timetable, schedule and session information will be distributed when you arrive. Please bring your own musical instruments.

ACCOMMODATION & MEALS - Accommodations for attendees will be in our Hands on History home which is a hostel type house by the river - accommodations are dorm style with shared rooms and bunk style beds, please be advised to bring your own sleeping bags. You may also bring air mattresses for additional comfort. Meals are included for Monday to Thursday night, and we have some great cooks here, been feeding groups of school kids and teachers for years.

HOW TO GET HERE - A 40-minute scenic drive south from Antigonish along highway #7 or 2 ½ hours east of Halifax on highway #7.

GUIDELINES FOR CLASSES - When you register, please indicate on the registration form in the space provided your level, playing experience & ability. Fiddle classes are geared to those players that have had at least 1-2 yrs experience (novice) to advanced musicians. Guitar and piano courses are directed toward serious students who wish to explore accompaniment of traditional music at the intermediate & advanced levels. Involvement in group or family playing opportunities is strongly suggested and will help you build on what you will learn at camp. Suggested entry level for piano students is approximately Grade 4/5 (Royal Conservatory) with a minimum age requirement of 14 years for the level of information to be taught. All other instrument classes will be taught at a level which is appropriate to the participants involved and may include varying levels.

NOVICE:  1-2 years experience and knowledge of the basics of your instrument. You learn tunes by ear at a slow pace with no ornamentation or bowing techniques.

INTERMEDIATE: Proficient on your instrument & learn at a moderate speed by ear. You are able to play various rhythms such as jigs, reels, strathspeys at or about up to speed.

ADVANCED: An experienced musician who learns quickly by ear. You are able to learn the advanced aspects of various styles such as ornamentation, bowing techniques and phrasing.

You will be informed of your class assignment after you pick-up your registration package and auditions. We make every effort to assign our participants to the appropriate level to maximize your musical experience during the school. It is therefore essential that you remain in the class to which you have been assigned. However, if you feel your class is too advanced or easy for your skill level, we ask that you inform your home room instructor and a coordinator, and we will ensure an appropriate reassignment. We cannot accommodate specific requests for instructors.
