Everyday, Sherbrooke Village turns the spotlight on some aspect of village life - from Heritage Skills Demonstrations to Music in any number of settings. This gives our staff the opportunity to shine by doing what they do best. Click here to take a closer look at Daily Animations at Historic Sherbrooke Village.

Throughout each day, Sherbrooke Village turns the spotlight on some aspect of village life, with heritage skills demonstrations, in a number of settings giving our staff the opportunity to shine by doing what they do best.

NEW for 2012
ADOPT A PUMPKIN
– If you don't have your own garden, it won't be a problem. Come out to Sherbrooke Village and plant your own pumpkin. You can return to check on its growth and harvest and then take part in a pumpkin carving. Cost will be $2 per pumpkin adopted. You will be guaranteed a pumpkin at time of harvest.

"WITH THESE TWO HANDS" – Showcases heritage skills featured on our interactive website: "With These Two Hands, the Commerce of Sherbrooke.”

TREASURE HUNT – Search for the museum’s hidden history treasures as you tour the site. The Sherbrooke Village Treasure Hunt adds a new element of interaction to a tour of the museum for children and families alike. Those who successfully complete their quest will be rewarded with a bounty from the treasure chest! Register at the Information Centre to take part and stop at the Company Store on the way out to pick up your bounty.

COURTHOUSE CONCERT SERIES – Concerts will be held Thursday evenings from June 28 to August 16 and October 4. Concerts will be held on Fridays, August 24 to September 28 offering music from a variety of genres. The 9th Annual Road to Celtic Colours Concert will be held on Thursday, October 4 and will be the final concert of the season. All concerts start at 7:30 pm

LEARNING CAMPS & WORKSHOPS:

“Enhance Your Experience, Expand Your Horizon with Sherbrooke Village Hands On Camps and Workshops”

Road to Stanfest Songwriters’ Music Camp - June 25 to June 28. Improve your abilities in the art, technique & craft of songwriting. up to 12 participants are chosen each year to perform at Stanfest. Featuring Instructors: Chuck Brodsky, Charlie A'Court, Clary Croft, Michael Johnson and Doris Mason. To Register

Sherbrooke Village Watercolour Camp - August 13 to 16 Susan Paterson will be leading a four day watercolour painting workshop in Sherbrooke Village. The village offers a wealth of material for painting and has inspired Susan for many years. There will be on-site painting throughout the village as well as interior and still life work. Students will work at their own pace, on the subject of their choice, while she guides them in drawing, composition, perspective and colour mixing, as well as various watercolour techniques. Each evening the class will get together for a short critique, conversation and socializing. To Register

Sherbrooke Village Photography Camps - We will be offering two workshops in 2011. The first will be a two day workshop on July 21 and 22 as well as our full four day workshop on October 1 to 4 featuring well known photographer Wally Hayes. The village offers a wealth of material for pictures which has inspired photographers for many years. There could be no more beautiful setting for this learning experience than the shores of the St. Mary’s River and the historic Sherbrooke Village site with its wealth of colour and architecture. SHERBROOKE SALUTES SENIORS – In recognition of the many and varied contributions seniors make to our society we will honour them with free admission for this day (65 years or older).

PUMPKIN PLANTING DAY – Day one of the great pumpkin adoption at Sherbrooke Village! Today you plant your own pumpkin. A garden plan will allow you to identify your pumpkin so you can watch it grow. Cost will be two dollars per individual pumpkin adopted Planting begins at 11 am. Mmm wonder what their names will be?

RHUBARB ROUNDUP - Nothing says "spring" quite like the sweet-tart taste of the year’s first rhubarb! Come and try our unique and "different" rhubarb treats and enjoy the music being offered by interpretive staff at St. James Presbyterian Church!

"WITH THESE TWO HANDS" Ambrotype – Invented by sculptor, Frederick Scott Archer in 1852, ambrotype is a unique form of photography in which pictures are taken on glass. It reached the peak of its popularity between 1857 and 1860, becoming less common in later years because of advances in technology. It has been suggested that the name ambrotype comes from the Greek word ambrotos, which means immortal.

FATHERS’ DAY – Dads will be admitted free. Bring your father to our Ambrotype Studio and dress him up as a 19th century gentleman. Our photographers will shoot his portrait on a glass plate with our original 1905 AGFA camera. Dad's portrait is 20% off today.

"WITH THESE TWO HANDS" Woodturning – The wood turner at Sherbrooke Village uses a treadle lathe and additional hand tools to make wooden work for the Restoration and for sale. Rolling pins, chairs, yo-yos, spin tops, and wooden spoons are among the items made. Visitors are invited to come watch the wood turner work in our traditional 1860’s shop. Turned items may be purchased at the Company Store.

"WITH THESE TWO HANDS" – Rug Hooking – try your hand at the age old craft of rug hooking.

"WITH THESE TWO HANDS" Smithing – Visitors are invited to watch the blacksmith at work as he uses traditional tools to shape metal into nails, hooks, hot dog forks and other ironwork. Our blacksmith’s products may be purchased by visitors at the Company Store

ROAD TO STANFEST SONGWRITERS’ CAMP – Improve your abilities in the art, technique & craft of songwriting! Come to the shores of the beautiful St. Mary’s River for a songwriting experience. There will be sing-a-longs, songwriters’ circles and campfires by the river. This is a great opportunity to work with and learn from talented, well known songwriters. Students will have the chance to compete for a special performance spot at the Stan Rogers Folk Festival. CEILIDH at the COURTHOUSE - Special Ceilidh celebrating Gaelic/Scottish Heritage Days on July 18 from 2:00 to 3:30 pm.

"WITH THESE TWO HANDS" We've Got Boats to Build – The St. Mary's River Punt was the vessel of choice for anglers who came from all over the world to fish the salmon pools of the St. Mary's River. Today we have local boat builder, Keith Horton on hand to share river lore and demonstrate how these unique boats are built. 1 - 4 pm.

HANDS ON CRAFTS – Children are invited to participate in Village life by taking part in a “Hands On”, interactive and fun experience. Today we will make wooden boats. Register at admissions for today’s craft. Material fee $3.

SHERBROOKE VILLAGE PHOTOGRAPHY CAMP – Facilitated by instructor Wally Hayes. We will host a two day photography workshop in Sherbrooke Village. The Village, the beautiful St. Mary’s River and the surrounding area offer a wealth of material for photography. There will be on-site photography throughout the Village with opportunities for interior shots as well. Saturday evening the class will get together for a short critique, conversation and socializing. Early registration is recommended as space is limited. Sign up today! Check in on Friday to be prepared for orientation Saturday morning. Sunday afternoon there will be a showing of photography taken over the weekend at the Exhibit Centre from 4 to 5 pm. Participants are welcome to arrive Friday evening to get settled in and acquainted.

SUNDAY GOSPEL MUSIC AND STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE – Join us for the sweet sounds of gospel music at St. James Church in Sherbrooke Village and top it off with the sweet flavor of homemade strawberry shortcake. Concert will begin at 1:00 pm, shortcake will be served at 2:30 pm

“A SPORTING DAY OF TRADITIONAL DRIVING”– Presented by The Nova Scotia Driving Society in Conjunction with Historic Sherbrooke Village. The Sporting Day focuses on traditional driving and includes three phases: a Turnout Inspection, a Country Drive and the Cones Course. The Country Drive will commence at Sherbrooke Village and continue along the St. Mary’s River on the Sonora Road, Carriages will return to Sherbrooke Village for the Cones Course & Turnout Inspection. 10 am - 4 pm

Sunday, July 29

SAWMILL FROLIC – McDonald Brothers' Sawmill, beginning at 2:00 pm. Join us for excitement and a few laughs around the mill pond for our friendly woodsmen’s competition. Competitions include hatchet throw, kettle boil, double buck saw and spike drive and antique saw demonstration. Competitions are free and open to everyone! Samples of our homemade baked beans and brown bread will be available at the Royal Oak Stamp Mill across the road.

GOLDMINE FROLIC – The Royal Oak Stamp Mill will be the scene of our annual celebration of the golden days of the Sherbrooke area. Members of the Heritage Goldenville Society will show visitors how to pan for gold (the real thing, not fool's gold!). There'll be samples of our "good as gold" recipes for baked beans and brown bread.

COURTHOUSE CONCERTThe Grady Family Join Terry and his children; Taylor, Brooke, Jessie, Cole & Jake playing a wide range of instruments and performing traditional Cape Breton fiddle sets with step dancing, east coast music, folk, country, alternative and a few of their own original songs, 7:30 pm, tickets $8 at the door.

"WITH THESE TWO HANDS" Pottery – The potters of Sherbrooke Village throw reproductions of the antique pottery found in the area. The clay, mined in Lantz since the 1800s, is called earthenware and has a reddish brown colour, the result of high iron content. With the exception of a modern kiln, the process used at the Village dates back to the 1800s, including the use of a traditional 150 pound kick wheel.

SHERBROOKE VILLAGE COMMUNITY PICNIC! We had so much fun at our birthday party in 2010 that we’ve decided to keep it going again this year by throwing a gigantic picnic with free hot dogs, cake and ice cream. Everyone welcome. There will be fun and games for all! 1 to 4 pm

SHERBROOKE WATERCOLOUR CAMP, ART EXHIBIT – Instructor Susan Paterson and camp participants will have a showing of their week’s work at the Exhibit Centre from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

COURTHOUSE CONCERT- Featuring Hal Bruce, ever since Hal Bruce witnessed the North American birth of The Beatles in February 1964, his musical influence was molded permanently. Since then, he has studied every song ever recorded by his heroes, from the instrumental parts to their unique vocal styling. His unique Beatles Tribute has netted invitations to various international events 7:30pm, tickets $8 at the door.

RALLY RUN FOR CATHY'S PLACE – The Rally That Gives committee will host a “Rally Run for Cathy’s Place.” This is a motorcyclists fundraiser for the Cancer Resource Room at St. Martha’s Hospital. ST. MARY'S GARDEN CLUB ANNUAL FLOWER SHOW & VILLAGE GARDEN TOURS – Garden Club display will be at the Village Exhibit Centre. Sherbrooke Village garden tours will be leaving the Information Centre on Saturday and Sunday at 10:30 am and 2 pm. Wear comfortable foot wear and learn of our local flora.

SHERBROOKE VILLAGE RALLY THAT GIVES – Motorcycle Rally fundraiser in aid of the Lodge That Gives, which offers a home away from home for cancer patients and their families living more than 50 km from the cancer treatment centre in Halifax. The event will feature music at the Performance Centre, poker run, lunch, field games, show & shine and dinner.

The Rally That Gives event is held outside the Village gates. Admission to the Rally events; field games, show & shine and concert are by donation to the Lodge That Gives. Regular admission still applies to visit the Sherbrooke Village Museum.

18th ANNUAL SHERBROOKE SHOW & SHINE – A gathering of classic and antique vehicles. Event will feature a road rally, music, dance at the Lions Hall, door prizes, raffle and a silent auction.

HISTORIC WARDROBE DEPARTMENT OPEN HOUSE – Visit us at the Wardrobe Department from 12 to 4 pm. Come and enjoy a rare behind-the-scenes look at the workings of our historical costume workshop. See the tools, techniques and materials that go into our old-fashioned garments and crafts.

"WITH THESE TWO HANDS" Weaving – It's truly an art form with its intricate and beautiful patterns. It is amazing to watch as a weaver throws a shuttle through a series of threads to create the desired pattern. The weavers at Sherbrooke Village can make anything from a set of placemats to a coverlet for a bed.

NINTH ANNUAL ROAD TO CELTIC COLOURS CEILIDH AT THE COURTHOUSE – Once again the Road to the Isles runs through Sherbrooke. This pre-festival event will allow visitors to get a head start on the music and magic that is Celtic Colours featuring Stan Chapman accompanied by Marion Dewar. 7:30 pm, admission $8 at the door, season passes will be honoured.

HARVEST WEEKEND – We're celebrating autumn and the harvest by making traditional country fare throughout the Village. We’re pressing apples to make cider like they did in days gone by and pulling out some original pumpkin recipes for treats.

 

Sunday, October7

PUMPKIN HARVEST – It’s finally time to come back and pick your pumpkin! All those who planted in spring are invited to come and pick their pumpkin. You’re invited to carve your pumpkin at the Village or take it with you if you would rather. There will be a limited number of extra pumpkins on hand if you were not here for the planting but would like to take part in the carving. Today 1 to 4 pm.
