Daily Animations

Everyday, Sherbrooke Village turns the spotlight on some aspect of village life - from Heritage Skills Demonstrations to Music in any number of settings. This gives our staff the opportunity to shine by doing what they do best. Click here to take a closer look at Daily Animations at Historic Sherbrooke Village.

WITH THESE TWO HANDS - Throughout each day, Sherbrooke Village turns the spotlight on some aspect of village life, with heritage skills demonstrations, in a number of settings giving our staff the opportunity to shine by doing what they do best. These skills include our ‘With These Two Hands” series.

TREASURE HUNT – Search for the museum’s hidden history treasures as you tour the site. The Sherbrooke Village Treasure Hunt adds a new element of interaction to a tour of the museum for children and families alike. Those who successfully complete their quest will be rewarded with a bounty from the treasure chest! Register at the Information Centre to take part and stop at the Company Store on the way out to pick up your bounty.

COURTHOUSE CONCERT SERIES – Concerts will be held Thursday evenings from July 4 to August 15 and October 3. Concerts will be held on Fridays, August 23 to September 27 offering music from a variety of genres. All concerts start at 7:30 pm, tickets $10 each at the door.

NEW IN 2013!

TIME TRAVELER'S REUNION – Members of the “Jules Verne Phantastical Society” and Sherbrooke Village are hosting a "Steampunk Social" with Garden Party, fashion show with prizes, workshops, dinner and entertainment. What a perfectly authentic setting to open the Steampunk season and catch up with fellow enthusiasts. While at the Village take a self-guided tour and visit the Jail for wood stove cookery, working blacksmith, wood turner, potter, printery and the ambrotype for period photography. Unlike a convention, there's no need to be "on" all the time... just relax, enjoy yourself with some good company and take in the location. Costuming encouraged but not required.

Sherbrooke Village Photography Camp - This year we will again be offering a four day workshop on September 16 to 19 featuring well known photographer Wally Hayes. The village offers a wealth of material for pictures which has inspired photographers for many years. There could be no more beautiful setting for this learning experience than the shores of the St. Mary’s River and the historic Sherbrooke Village site with its wealth of colour and architecture. SHERBROOKE SALUTES SENIORS – In recognition of the many and varied contributions seniors make to our society we will honour them with free admission for this day (65 years or older).

“WITH THESE TWO HANDS” Quilting & Flax Demonstration – “Love is a gift that is surely handmade." Members of our interpretive staff will showcase their quilting and stitch work skills and demonstrate the flax process from seed to linen.

Sunday, June 9

Adopt-A-Pumpkin – Day one of the great pumpkin adoption at Sherbrooke Village! Today you plant your own pumpkin. A garden plan will allow you to identify your pumpkin so you can watch it grow. Cost will be two dollars per individual pumpkin adopted. Planting will be from 10:30 am to 12 pm and 1 to 2:30 pm. Mmm wonder what their names will be?

RHUBARB ROUNDUP – Nothing says "spring" quite like the sweet-tart taste of the year’s first rhubarb! Come and try our unique and "different" rhubarb treats at the Jailhouse and enjoy the music being offered by interpretive staff at St. James Presbyterian Church!

 FATHERS’ DAY – Dads will be admitted free. Bring your father to our Ambrotype Studio and dress him up as a 19th century gentleman. Our photographers will shoot his portrait on a glass plate with our original 1905 AGFA camera. Dad's portrait is 20% off today.

"WITH THESE TWO HANDS" Ambrotype – Invented by sculptor, Frederick Scott Archer in 1852, ambrotype is a unique form of photography in which pictures are taken on glass. It reached the peak of its popularity between 1857 and 1860, becoming less common in later years because of advances in technology. It has been suggested that the name ambrotype comes from the Greek word ambrotos, which means immortal.

HISTORIC WARDROBE DEPARTMENT OPEN HOUSE – Visit us at the Wardrobe Department from 12 to 4 pm. Come and enjoy a rare behind-the-scenes look at the workings of our historical costume workshop. Visit the tools, techniques and
materials that go into our old-fashioned garments and crafts.

HATS OFF TO FASHION - Drop into the Tailor Shop as they construct and discuss age old styles of millinery with emphasis on the Village Collection of hats.

“WITH THESE TWO HANDS” Stitch Craft – Stitch crafts are in and we have the perfect setting! Members of our interpretive staff will showcase their quilting, stitch work and knitting skills used to create fashionable pieces from the past.

CANADA DAY – Down Sherbrooke way, celebrate Canada's birthday! There will be a street parade, pony rides, a concert at the performance centre with a fireworks display to follow.

ROAD TO STANFEST SONGWRITERS’ CAMP – Improve your abilities in the art, technique & craft of songwriting! Come to the shores of the beautiful St. Mary’s River for a songwriting experience. There will be sing-a-longs, songwriters’ circles and campfires by the river. This is a great opportunity to work with and learn from talented, well known songwriters. Students will have the chance to compete for a special performance spot at the Stan Rogers Folk Festival. SHERBROOKE VILLAGE WOOLCRAFT WEEKEND – Join Village staff as they work natural, hand shorn, sheep wool through the process. They will wash, dry, pick, card, dye, spin, weave and knit to produce functional wool products of a century ago.

KIDS CRAFTS – Children are invited to participate in Village life by taking part in a “Hands On”, interactive and fun experience. Today we will make a wool craft. Register at admissions for today’s craft. Material fee $3

SAWMILL FROLIC – McDonald Brothers' Sawmill, beginning at 2:00 pm. Join us for excitement and a few laughs around the mill pond for our friendly woodsmen’s competition. Competitions include hatchet throw, kettle boil, double buck saw and spike drive and antique saw demonstration. Competitions are free and open to everyone! Samples of our homemade baked beans and brown bread will be available at the Royal Oak Stamp Mill across the road.

GOLDMINE FROLIC – The Royal Oak Stamp Mill will be the scene of our annual celebration of the golden days of the Sherbrooke area. Members of the Heritage Goldenville Society will show visitors how to pan for gold (the real thing, not fool's gold!). There'll be samples of our "good as gold" recipes for baked beans and brown bread.

COURTHOUSE CONCERT - Ardyth & Jennifer are wonderful story tellers with a unique sound that explores the many possibilities of the folk harp. Their stage presentations are moving, lively journeys- come join them in their travels, 7:30 pm, tickets $10 at the door.

KIDS CRAFTS - We’re making history more meaningful for children by offering a special program highlighting “Hands On” fun and games.

Pumpkin visit – How is your pumpkin growing? Come and visit your adopted pumpkin and see how it is doing. Our gardener will be on hand with her garden plan to help you identify your own pumpkin.

SUNDAY GOSPEL MUSIC AND STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE – Join us for the sweet sounds of gospel music at St. James Church in Sherbrooke Village and top it off with the sweet flavor of homemade strawberry shortcake. Beginning at 1:00 pm.

COURTHOUSE CONCERT - Featuring Hal Bruce, ever since Hal Bruce witnessed the North American birth of The Beatles in February 1964, his musical influence was molded permanently. Since then, he has studied every song ever recorded by his heroes, from the instrumental parts to their unique vocal styling. His unique Beatles Tribute has netted invitations to various international events, 7:30 pm, tickets $10 at the door.

"WITH THESE TWO HANDS" We’ve Got Boats to Build” – The St. Mary's River Punt was the vessel of choice for anglers who came from all over the world to fish the salmon pools of the St. Mary's River. Today we have local boat builder, Keith Horton, on hand to share river lore and demonstrate how these unique boats are built 1 pm to 4 pm.

KIDS CRAFTS – Children are invited to participate in Village life by taking part in a “Hands On”, interactive and fun experience. Today we will make wooden boats. Register at admissions for today’s craft. Material fee $3.

“A SPORTING DAY OF HORSE & CARRIAGE DRIVING ” Presented by The Nova Scotia Driving Society in Conjunction with Historic Sherbrooke Village. The Sporting Day focuses on traditional driving and includes three phases: a Turnout Inspection, a Country Drive and the Cones Course. The Country Drive will commence at Sherbrooke Village and continue along the St. Mary’s River on the Sonora Road, Carriages will return to Sherbrooke Village for the Cones Course & Turnout Inspection. 10 a.m. - 4 p.m

HOP ABOARD THE HORSE AND WAGON - Tour the Village like they did before automobiles. Your ride will be narrated along the way!

COURTHOUSE CONCERT - An evening with Blain Henshaw featuring original works plus the best of Gordon Lightfoot, Ian Tyson, Gene MacLennan and more, admission $10 at the door.

Friday, August 16 to Sunday, August 18

ST. MARY'S GARDEN CLUB ANNUAL FLOWER SHOW & Village Garden Tours – Garden Club display will be at the Village Exhibit Centre. Sherbrooke Village garden tours will be leaving the Information Centre on Saturday and Sunday at 10:30 am and 2 pm. Wear comfortable foot wear and learn of our local flora.
 

Sunday, August 18

"WITH THESE TWO HANDS" Smithing - Visitors are invited to watch the blacksmith at work as he uses traditional tools to shape metal into nails, hooks, hot dog forks and other ironwork. Our blacksmith’s products may be purchased by visitors at the Company Store.

Pumpkin visit – How is your pumpkin growing? Come and visit your adopted pumpkin and see how it is doing. Our gardener will be on hand with her garden plan to help you identify your own pumpkin.

COURTHOUSE CONCERT - This will be the kick-off concert for our third annual Rally That Gives, weekend featuring "Friday Night Blues” 7:30 pm, tickets $10 at the door.

Friday, August 23 to Saturday, August 24

SHERBROOKE VILLAGE RALLY THAT GIVES – Motorcycle Rally fundraiser in aid of the Lodge That Gives, which offers a home away from home for cancer patients and their families living more than 50 km from the cancer treatment centre in Halifax. The event will feature music at the Performance Centre, poker run, lunch, field games, show & shine and BBQ.

The Rally That Gives event is held outside the Village gates. Admission to the Rally events; field games, show & shine and concert are by donation to the Lodge That Gives. Regular admission still applies to visit the Sherbrooke Village Museum.

COURTHOUSE CONCERT - Cape Breton born vocalist, Sam Moon has been performing for over 30 years and has shared the stage with; ZZ Top, The Guess Who, The Doobie Brothers, Sash Jordan, The Band, The Atlantic Rhythm Section, Delbert Maclinton and The Beach Boys. Sam has just released a new album "New Moon” and has received numerous awards including; Entertainer Of  The Year, Shure Mike Award and was the 1st Maritime Artist to break the TOP 20. 7:30pm, tickets $10 at the door.

VERY VERY BLUEBERRY & LABOUR DAY APPRECIATION – Visit Sherbrooke this weekend and show your Union Membership card for 2 for 1 admission. Pay for one admission at regular price and get 2nd admission, same price or less for free. Applies to one day pass only.

Wild blueberries are the number 1 fruit crop in acreage export sales, and value in Nova Scotia and we’re celebrating the harvest by serving up recipes from the past such as jams, muffins, grunts and tarts. While visiting the Village, drop into our jail and test try the finished products.

19th ANNUAL SHERBROOKE SHOW & SHINE – A gathering of classic and antique vehicles. Event will feature a road rally, music, dance at the Lions Hall, door prizes, raffle and a silent auction.

HARVEST WEEKEND –We're celebrating autumn and the harvest by making traditional country fare and pulling out some original pumpkin recipes for treats.

PUMPKIN HARVEST – It’s finally time to come back and pick your pumpkin! All those who planted in spring are invited to come and pick their pumpkin. You’re invited to carve your pumpkin at the Village or take it with you if you would rather. There will be a limited number of extra pumpkins on hand if you were not here for the planting but would like to take part in the carving. 1 to 4 pm both days.

COURTHOUSE CONCERT - This will be our annual Sherbrooke Shares variety concert in aid of the St. Mary’s Food Bank 7:30 pm, tickets $10 at the door.

"WITH THESE TWO HANDS" Weaving is truly an art form with its intricate and beautiful patterns. It is amazing to watch as a weaver throws a shuttle through a series of threads to create the desired pattern. The weavers at Sherbrooke Village can make anything from a set of placemats to a coverlet for a bed.

OLD FASHIONED CHRISTMAS - Make plans now to attend this years’ Sherbrooke Village Old Fashioned Christmas, November 22 to 24. The event  will feature an opening night tree lighting and candle light procession and fireworks. Christmas crafts, concerts, festive dining, Victorian tea and more! There’s something for everyone this Holiday Season so get your Hands on History while getting into the Holiday Spirit at Sherbrooke Village. Our past is your adventure!
