HANDS ON HISTORY ASSISTANT - Intended for Students

Sherbrooke Village has an opening for summer employment as a Program/Heritage Interpreter between May 21 and August 23, 2013.
Position will be 35 hours per week and will include some week-ends and evenings including overtime during events. Salary is $11.00 per hour.

Successful candidate will develop, organize, promote and implement the Hands On History program being offered by Sherbrooke Village. Experience and/or training in childrens studies, Canadian and/or local history, program enhancement, presentation, coordination, public service or facilitating would be an asset. Good organizational and public relations skills required as well as the ability to work with groups of children and families. Ability to work with minimum supervision also required.

Applicants must be full time students in the 2012/2013 season and must be enrolled or planning to enroll in a post-secondary program at an accredited educational institution and returning to school in the fall.

FESTIVAL & EVENTS ASSISTANT - Intended for Students  

Sherbrooke Village has an opening for summer employment as a Festival & Event Assistant between May 27 and August 22, 2013.

Position will be 35 hours per week and will include some week-ends and evenings. Salary is $13.00 per hour.
Successful candidate will develop, organize, promote and implement special events, concerts and activities being held by the Village.
Experience and/or training in Festival & Event administration, presentation and coordination and facilitating special events would be an asset.
Must have good computer, photography and public relations skills. Some local travel will be required so access to own transportation is required. Ability to work with minimum supervision also required.

Applicants must be post secondary students in the 2012/2013 season and must be accepted in a post-secondary program at an accredited educational institution and returning to school in the fall. Successful candidate must show copies of marks for past year.

CURATORIAL ASSISTANT - Intended for Students 

Sherbrooke Village has an opening for summer employment as a Program/Heritage Interpreter between May 27 and August 16, 2013.
Position will be 35 hours per week and may include some week-ends and evenings. Salary is $11.00 per hour.

Successful candidate will learn about preventative conservation relating to the care and cleaning of the artifact collection, how to use the MIMS data base (Museum information management system) for cataloguing artifacts, basic display techniques and trends and how to merge interpretive programs with collections. Experience working with inventory, collections, data entry, computer programs, coordination, public service or exhibit design would be an asset. Good organizational and public relations skills required. Ability to work with minimum supervision also required.

Applicants must be full time students in the 2012/2013 season and must be enrolled or planning to enroll in a post-secondary program at an accredited educational institution and returning to school in the fall. Candidate must be accountable, adaptable and dependable, have public relations skills and be able to work as part of a team.

GARDEN/FARM INTERPRETER - Intended for Students

Sherbrooke Village has an opening for a Garden/Farm Interpreter

Hours would be 9:30am to 5:00pm five days per week with ½ hour for lunch. Salary is $11.00 per hour from May 27 to August 23, 2013.

Responsibilities will include: Care and feeding of livestock. Keeping assigned areas of gardens and grounds ready for the viewing public, including ensuring co-workers and public are aware of and follow all applicable health and safety rules and guidelines.  Informally engage visitors so that they are more knowledgeable about farm life, issues of the period, as well as how and why things changed

Heritage Interpreter

Sherbrooke Village has opening for Heritage Interpreters!
Heritage Interpreters are responsible for providing knowledgeable and courteous interpretation of the buildings and the site to the general public, as well as caring for the artifacts and buildings assigned to them.  Working with other site staff the Heritage Interpreter will deliver interpretive programs and services such as house tours, school programs, events, workshops, food preparation and serving, off- site activities, and demonstrations. The position also includes collections care, cleaning buildings and general cleaning of the grounds surrounding the buildings.  The goal of all Heritage Interpreters is to progressively add to their knowledge of the Sherbrooke Village buildings (written & oral) along with the architectural details; genealogy; construction methods and materials and displayed competency in traditional skill sets.  Heritage Interpreter staff are expected to take on leadership roles and help co-workers gain knowledge of the required skill sets. Interpreters are further expected to continue to attain satisfactory performance reviews. The Heritage Interpreter has personal contact with thousands of visitors annually and is responsible for achieving the requirements of the position while adhering to the mission and vision of Sherbrooke Village.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate must have:

  • High school completion certificate or experiential equivalent.

Skills which would be considered an asset are:

  • Experience with Children and/or children’s studies;
  • Knowledge of traditional crafts (Blacksmithing, Weaving, Woodturning, Pottery)
  • Also children’s crafts, knitting, sewing skills, quilting, etc
  • Outdoor interpretation
  • Knowledge of Canadian and/or local history;
  • Program enhancement, presentation, coordination, public service or facilitating;
  • Point of Sale systems;
  • Debit machines;
  • Computer applications;
  • Comfort with addressing crowds and the media, particularly radio and television interviews.

Excellent communication skills required to interact with all ages of the public, interpersonal, organizational and time management skills.  Must be dependable, adaptable and work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail in an environment where frequent interruptions, multiple priorities, deadlines and concurrent activities occur.

Able to work both independently and as part of a team, and can embrace change in support of an ever changing program.  Use initiative and demonstrate creativity in solving on the spot problems.

Position will be 35 hours per week with regular working days being Thursday to Monday. Salary:  14.48 Closing date:  May 17, 2013

Sawmill Sawyer Assistant/Labourer

This is a term position from May 27, 2013 to September 28, 2013.

The Sawmill Sawyer Assistant/Labourer is responsible for providing knowledgeable and courteous interpretation of the McDonald Brother’s Sawmill and sawmill area to the general public. The Sawmill Sawyer Assistant/Labourer is also responsible for assisting the Sawmill Sawyer/Maintenance worker and the Sawmill Sawyer Assistant in the historical demonstration of sawmill practices as well as for the care and maintenance of the gold mining building. The Sawmill Sawyer Assistant/Labourer has personal contact with thousands of visitors annually and is responsible for achieving the requirements of the position while adhering to the mission and vision of Sherbrooke Village. 

Qualifications:
The successful candidate must have:

  • High school completion certificate or experiential equivalent.

Skills which would be considered an asset are:

  • Knowledge and experience with sawmill equipment;
  • Techniques and safe operating procedures
  • Completion of safety courses, such as WHMIS & First Aid, would be an asset
  • Knowledge of local history
  • Assist in the care of the gold mining building, nature trail and goldmine camp, cleaning around the yards and inside the buildings as required.
  • Able to lift heavy objects up to and exceeding 22.7 kg.
  • Able to endure physically demanding outdoor programming.

Excellent communication skills required to interact with all ages of the public, interpersonal, organizational and time management skills.  Must be dependable, adaptable and work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail in an environment where frequent interruptions, multiple priorities, deadlines and concurrent activities occur.

Able to work both independently and as part of a team, and can embrace change in support of an evolving program.  Use initiative and demonstrate creativity in solving on the spot problems.

Position will be 35 hours per week, shift work will be required. Salary:  $15.97 per hour. Closing date:  May 17, 2013
