NEW FOR 2010

SHERBROOKE VILLAGE PHOTOGRAPHY CAMP - October 4 to 7. Sherbrooke Village will be hosting a four day photography workshop featuring well known photographer Wally Hayes. The village offers a wealth of material for pictures which has inspired photographers for many years. There could be no more beautiful setting for this learning experience than the shores of the St. Mary’s River and the historic Sherbrooke Village site with its wealth of colour and architecture. Wally will instruct and guide students in the basic to intermediate aspects of digital photography. Visit Wally’s Blog http://www.novascotiablogs.com/whereiswally/. BEAD EMBROIDERY CAMP – September 18 and 19. Two day workshop with instructor Meg Wilcox, Sherbrooke Villages own costumer. Heritage crafts are in and we have the perfect setting. Participants are welcome to come on Friday evening to get settled in. Cost $299 each plus HST. Meals and lodging included. Kits with supplies you require will be sold separately at a cost of $25. Please register by August 20. Only 10 participants accepted. Come early and visit Sherbooke Village Free!

VICTORIAN-STYLE FELT APPLIQUE EMBROIDERY WORKSHOP – July 17, 12:30 to 5 pm. with Sherbrooke Village Costumer Meg Wilcox. Cost is $45 plus HST. COURTHOUSE CONCERT SERIES – Concerts will be held Thursday evenings from June 24 to August 19 except July 1 when there will be a Canada Day Concert and on Fridays, August 27 to October 1 offering music from a variety of genres. The final concert of the season, The Road to Celtic Colours Concert will be held on Thursday, October 7. All concerts start at 7:30 pm.

TREASURE HUNT – Search for the museum’s hidden history treasures as you tour the site. The Sherbrooke Village Treasure Hunt adds a new element of interaction to a tour of the museum for children and families alike. Those who successfully complete their quest will be rewarded with a bounty from the treasure chest! Register at the Information Centre to take part and stop at the Company Store on the way out to pick up your bounty.

"WITH THESE TWO HANDS" – Woodturning - The wood turner at Sherbrooke Village uses a treadle lathe and additional hand tools to make wooden work for the Restoration and for sale. Rolling pins, chairs, yo-yos, spin tops, and wooden spoons are among the items made. Visitors are invited to come watch the wood turner work in our traditional 1860’s shop. Turned items may be purchased at the Company Store.

SHEEP SHEARING DAY! - It’s time for Nelson and Edward, our Cotswold sheep to shed their winter coats in the time-honoured tradition of hand shearing.

FATHERS’ DAY – Dads will be admitted free. Bring your father to our Ambrotype Studio and dress him up as a 19th century gentleman. Our photographers will shoot his portrait on a glass plate with our original 1905 AGFA camera. Dad's portrait is 20% off today.

Students will have the chance to compete for a special performance spot at the Stan Rogers Folk Festival. CANADA DAY – Down Sherbrooke way, celebrate Canada's birthday! There will be a street parade, a concert at the performance centre and a fireworks display.

"WITH THESE TWO HANDS" We've Got Boats to Build – The St. Mary's River Punt was the vessel of choice for anglers who came from all over the world to fish the salmon pools of the St. Mary's River. Today we have local boat builder, Keith Horton on hand to share river lore and demonstrate how these unique boats are built. 1 - 4 pm.

HANDS ON CRAFTS – Children are invited to participate in Village life by taking part in a “Hands On”, interactive and fun experience. Today we will make wooden boats. Register at admissions for today’s craft. Material fee $3.

SHERBROOKE VILLAGE FIDDLE CAMP – Come to the shores of the beautiful St. Mary’s River for a musical experience. You can improve your fiddle, piano, guitar, banjo and mandolin playing abilities, visit our heritage site and enjoy nature walks and village fun at its best. SAWMILL FROLIC – McDonald Brothers' Sawmill, beginning at 2:00 pm. Join us for excitement and a few laughs around the mill pond for our friendly woodsmen’s competition. Competitions include hatchet throw, kettle boil, double buck saw and spike drive. We are hoping to add an antique saw category this year so dust off your old saw and bring it along. Competitions are free and open to everyone! Arthur Turner will be with us again this year to do one of his chainsaw sculptures. Fill out a ballot to win this years carving! Samples of our homemade baked beans and brown bread will be available at the Royal Oak Stamp Mill across the road.

GOLDMINE FROLIC – The Royal Oak Stamp Mill will be the scene of our annual celebration of the golden days of the Sherbrooke area. Members of the Heritage Goldenville Society will show visitors how to pan for gold (the real thing, not fool's gold!). There'll be samples of our "good as gold" recipes for baked beans and brown bread.

"WITH THESE TWO HANDS" Pottery - The potters of Sherbrooke Village throw reproductions of the antique pottery found in the area. The clay, mined in Lantz since the 1800s, is called earthenware and has a reddish brown colour, the result of a high iron content. With the exception of a modern kiln, the process used at the Village dates back to the 1800s, including the use of a traditional 150 pound kick wheel.

SHERBROOKE WATERCOLOUR CAMP - Susan Paterson will be leading a four day watercolour painting workshop in Sherbrooke Village. The village offers a wealth of material for painting and has inspired Susan for many years. There will be on-site painting throughout the Village as well as interior and still life work. Students will work at their own pace, on the subject of their choice, while she guides them in drawing, composition, perspective and colour mixing, as well as various watercolour techniques. Each evening the class will get together for a short critique, conversation and socializing. Early registration is recommended as space is limited. Sign up today!

"WITH THESE TWO HANDS" Printing - The Print Shop in Sherbrooke Village continues to keep the traditional way of printing alive by having a 123 year old operating printing press on site. The Print Shop also holds several different kinds of type that our printers still use when printing such things as wedding invitations, Courthouse Concert tickets, and recipe cards.

"WITH THESE TWO HANDS" Ambrotype, invented by sculptor, Frederick Scott Archer in 1852, is a unique form of photography in which pictures are taken on glass. It reached the peak of its popularity between 1857 and 1860, becoming less common in later years because of advances in technology. It has been suggested that the name ambrotype comes from the Greek word ambrotos, which means immortal.

SHERBROOKE VILLAGE RALLY THAT GIVES – Motorcycle Rally fundraiser in aid of the Lodge That Gives, which offers a home away from home for cancer patients and their families living more than 50 km from the cancer treatment centre in Halifax. "WITH THESE TWO HANDS" Weaving is truly an art form with its intricate and beautiful patterns. It is amazing to watch as a weaver throws a shuttle through a series of threads to create the desired pattern. The weavers at Sherboroke Village can make anything from a set of placemats to a coverlet for a bed.

SEVENTH ANNUAL ROAD TO CELTIC COLOURS CEILIDH AT THE COURTHOUSE – Once again the Road to the Isles runs through Sherbrooke. This pre-festival event will allow visitors to get a head start on the music and magic that is Celtic Colours. 7:30 pm, admission $12.00 at the door, season passes will be honoured.

Throughout the day, Sherbrooke Village turns the spotlight on some aspect of village life - with heritage skills demonstrations, in any number of settings. This gives our staff the opportunity to shine by doing what they do best.

SHERBROOKE VILLAGE WATERCOLOUR CAMP - August 10 to 13
Susan Paterson will be leading a 4 day watercolour painting workshop in Sherbrooke Village.  The village offers a wealth of material for painting and has inspired Susan for many years.  There will be on-site painting throughout the village as well as interior and still life work.  Students will work at their own pace, on the subject of their choice, while she guides them in drawing, composition, perspective and colour mixing, as well as various watercolour techniques.  Each evening the class will get together for a short critique, conversation and socializing.

COURTHOUSE CONCERT SERIES – Concerts will be held Thursday evenings from June 25 to August 20 and on Fridays, August 28 to October 2 offering music from a variety of genres.  SHERBROOKE VILLAGE FIDDLE CAMP – Featuring instructors; US Grand National Fiddle Champion, 3-time Canadian Open National Fiddle Champion, 3-time Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Champion, Grand North American Fiddle Champion, Shane Cook, Canadian Grand Master Fiddling Championship Lifetime Achievement Award 2007, North American Fiddlers Hall of Fame and Museum Institute - International Inductee  Ivan & Vivian Hicks, with Kimberley & Skip Holmes. Fiddle classes are geared to those players that have had at least 1-2 yrs experience (novice) to advanced musicians. Guitar, piano and banjo courses are directed toward students who wish to explore accompaniment of traditional music at the novice and intermediate levels. Involvement in group or family playing opportunities is strongly suggested and will help you build on what you will learn at camp. Instrument classes will be taught at a level which is appropriate to the participants involved and may include varying levels. Come to the shores of the beautiful St. Mary’s River for a musical experience. Courthouse Concert- featuring the Vagabonds, a newly formed Canadian trio who perform a wide variety of acoustic music from old covers to brand new originals. Drawing from the rich Celtic sounds of Cape Breton, the sweet vocal harmonies of gospel and the soulful melodies of the folk era; these multi-instrumentalists create a unique musical experience with intricate harmony and original arrangements 7:30pm, tickets $8 at the door.

 Courthouse Concert – featuring: Former Ordinary Horse
Comprised of members Andrew Stalker (guitar,vocals), Dave Tellum (bass, vocals) and Garth Wilson (lead guitar/vocal), Former Ordinary Horse entertains with an eclectic mix of original songs written by Andrew, and cover tunes culled from pop, rock  and  folk music from the past 50 years. Playing together for over one year now, the guys met at the Bauer Theater's much loved Dylan shows, and as they say, the rest is history.

 Courthouse Concert- featuring Hal Bruce, ever since Hal Bruce witnessed the North American birth of The Beatles in February 1964, his musical influence was molded permanently. Since then, he has studied every song ever recorded by his heroes, from the instrumental parts to their unique vocal styling. His unique Beatles Tribute has netted invitations to various international events 7:30pm, tickets $8 at the door.

 "WITH THESE TWO HANDS" WE’VE GOT BOATS TO BUILD” – The St. Mary's River Punt was the vessel of choice for anglers who came from all over the world to fish the salmon pools of the St. Mary's River. Today we have local boat builder, Keith Horton on hand to share river lore and demonstrate how these unique boats are built 1:00pm to 4:00pm

Sherbrooke watercolour CAMP - Susan Paterson will be leading a 4 day watercolour painting workshop in Sherbrooke Village.  The village offers a wealth of material for painting and has inspired Susan for many years.  There will be on-site painting throughout the village as well as interior and still life work.  Students will work at their own pace, on the subject of their choice, while she guides them in drawing, composition, perspective and colour mixing, as well as various watercolour techniques.  Each evening the class will get together for a short critique, conversation and socializing.

 Courthouse Concert-featuring Dan Mason, Dan Mason is recording his new CD with award-winning producer Tim Feswick early this summer. The CD will feature 10 songs all written by Dan that for the most part, will be in the 'new country' style... high energy and melodic country 7:30pm, tickets $8 at the door.

 St. Mary's Seafood Festival activities will take place in Port Bickerton and will include a fish fry and adult dance.

 SHERBROOKE VILLAGE RALLY THAT GIVES  –  Motorcycle Rally fundraiser in aid of the Lodge That Gives which offers a home away from home for cancer patients and their families living more than 50 km away from the cancer treatment centre in Halifax. The event will feature music at the Performance Centre, dance, field games, show & shine, dinner and poker run.

 Courthouse Concert- featuring Dan McKinnon award-winning singer, guitarist, songwriter and historian Dan McKinnon hails from the Canadian Maritimes, an area rich in the musical and cultural traditions of the North Atlantic. His warm baritone voice, superb guitar arrangements and original compositions have won this native Nova Scotian widespread praise. This will be an earth friendly concert that will really take you back in time. Dan will be unplugged and so will we with kerosene lamps and candles for lighting 7:30pm admission $8 at the door.

 WITH THESE TWO HANDS "It's a Fine Pickle!" – We'll be making some of Sherbrooke's renowned jams and pickles in the kitchen of the Jail. See how the harvest was preserved in Victorian days... smell and taste the special magic that only wood stove cookery can add to a cherished recipe.

 SIXTH ANNUAL ROAD TO CELTIC COLOURS CEILIDH AT THE COURTHOUSE – Once again the Road to the Isles runs through Sherbrooke. This pre-festival event will allow visitors to get a head start on the music and magic that is Celtic Colours. 7:30 pm admission $12.00 at the door, season passes will be honored.
