Sherbrooke and the surrounding area is host to a variety of services and amenities including a hospital, library, schools, police and fire departments, bank, post office, and sporting facilities. The Municipality provides services such as water, sewer, a municipal garbage transfer station, street lighting, building inspection, program development department, roads, policing, subdivision and assessments. It also provides grants to community groups.
The Municipality of the District of St. Mary's, which was incorporated in 1879, has a population of approximately 2,700 and occupies roughly 1,909.57 square km of land area. The Municipality consists of seven municipal districts with seven municipal representatives.
Guysborough County occupies the south-eastern section of mainland Nova Scotia, being bounded on the north by Antigonish and Pictou Counties, on the west by Halifax County, on the south by the Atlantic Ocean and on the east by Chedabucto Bay and the Strait of Canso. The county has an area of 1,049,491 acres and is the second largest county in the province. The county is divided into two Municipalities, Guysborough to the east and St. Mary's to the west along with two towns, Canso, east by Chedabucto Bay and Mulgrave on the Strait of Canso.
